वैशंपायन उवाच एवं स नाहुषो राजा ययातिः पुत्रमीप्सितम् राज्येऽभिषिच्य मुदितो वानप्रस्थोऽभवन्मुनिः
Vaiśampāyana said: Having instated his beloved son as the king, Nāhuṣa's son King Yayāti was happy and became a sage in the forest.
वैशम्पायन ने कहा: अपने प्रिय पुत्र को राजा बनाकर नहुष के पुत्र राजा ययाति प्रसन्न हुए और जंगल में ऋषि बन गये।
He lived in the forest with Brāhmana-s, rigid in his vows and living on roots and fruit. After a life of self-control, he ascended to heaven.
वह जंगल में ब्राह्मणों के साथ रहता था, अपनी प्रतिज्ञाओं में दृढ़ था और जड़ों और फलों पर रहता था। आत्म-नियंत्रण के जीवन के बाद, वह स्वर्ग में चढ़ गये।

मैंने सुना है कि जब उसे स्वर्ग से नीचे फेंका गया तो वह आकाश में ही लटका रहा और धरती पर नहीं पहुंचा।
It has been said that he later again went to heaven, together with the kings Vasumana, Aṣṭaka, the valorous Pratardana and Śibi.
ऐसा कहा गया है कि वह बाद में राजाओं वसुमान, अष्टक, वीर प्रतर्दन और शिबि के साथ फिर से स्वर्ग चले गए।

जनमेजय उवाच कर्मणा केन स दिवं पुनः प्राप्तो महीपतिः सर्वमेतदशेषेण श्रोतुमिच्छामि तत्त्वतः कथ्यमानं त्वया विप्र विप्रर्षिगणसंनिधौ
Janamejaya asked: Through what deeds did the lord of the earth again attain heaven? O Brāhmaṇa! Before all these Brāhmaṇas who are riṣi-s, I wish to hear all the details.
जनमेजय ने पूछा: किन कर्मों से पृथ्वी के स्वामी को पुनः स्वर्ग की प्राप्ति हुई? हे ब्राह्मण! इन सभी ब्राह्मणों, जो ऋषि हैं, से पहले मैं सारा विवरण सुनना चाहता हूँ।
Yayāti was like the king of the gods and lord of the earth. He extended the Pūru lineage. He was as resplendent as the sun.

वैशंपायन उवाच हन्त ते कथयिष्यामि ययातेरुत्तरां कथाम् दिवि चेह च पुण्यार्थां सर्वपापप्रणाशिनीम्
Vaiśampāyana said: I will recount for you the excellent account of Yayāti's exploits, in heaven and here. This is sacred and destroys sins for all those who hear it.
वैशम्पायन ने कहा: मैं तुम्हें स्वर्ग और यहाँ ययाति के कारनामों का उत्कृष्ट विवरण सुनाऊंगा। यह पवित्र है और इसे सुनने वाले सभी लोगों के पापों का नाश करता है।
Having instated his youngest son Pūru on the throne, Nāhuṣa's son, King Yayāti, happily retired to the forest.

अन्तेषु स विनिक्षिप्य पुत्रान्यदुपुरोगमान् फलमूलाशनो राजा वने संन्यवसच्चिरम्
He cast aside to the farthest corners his other sons, with Yadu at their head. The king lived in the forest for a long time, surviving on roots and fruit.
उसने अपने अन्य पुत्रों को, जिनके सिर पर यदु था, दूर कोने में फेंक दिया। राजा बहुत समय तक जंगल में रहकर कंद-मूल और फल खाकर जीवित रहा।
He paid homage to the gods and the ancestors, conquered his rage and controlled his senses. He poured offerings into the fire, as prescribed for those who retire to the forest.
उन्होंने देवताओं और पूर्वजों को श्रद्धांजलि अर्पित की, अपने क्रोध पर विजय प्राप्त की और अपनी इंद्रियों पर नियंत्रण रखा। उन्होंने अग्नि में आहुतियाँ डालीं, जैसा कि जंगल में जाने वालों के लिए निर्धारित है।
The lord worshipped his guests by offering forest food and ghee. He sustained himself through gleanings of corn and remnants of food from others.
भगवान ने अपने अतिथियों को वन भोजन और घी अर्पित करके पूजा की। उन्होंने दूसरों से अनाज और बचे हुए भोजन को बीनकर अपना भरण-पोषण किया।

पूर्णं वर्षसहस्रं स एवंवृत्तिरभून्नृपः अब्भक्षः शरदस्त्रिंशदासीन्नियतवाङ्मनाः
In this way, the king passed a full thousand years. For thirty autumns he lived on water alone, controlling his mind and speech.
इस प्रकार राजा को पूरे एक हजार वर्ष व्यतीत हो गये। तीस शरद ऋतु तक वे अपने मन और वाणी पर नियंत्रण रखते हुए अकेले जल पर रहे।

ततश्च वायुभक्षोऽभूत्संवत्सरमतन्द्रितः पञ्चाग्निमध्ये च तपस्तेपे संवत्सरं नृपः
For one year he lived on air, without sleeping. For another year, he performed austerities amid the five sacred fires.
एक साल तक वह बिना सोए हवा में रहे। एक और वर्ष तक, उन्होंने पाँच पवित्र अग्नियों के बीच तपस्या की।
For six months, he stood immobile on one leg. The performer of sacred deeds then ascended heaven.
छह महीने तक वह एक पैर पर स्थिर खड़ा रहा। फिर पवित्र कर्म करने वाला स्वर्ग चला गया।
